Yesterday, I spent a good few hours on deviantArt, browsing the People and Portraits section.

Today, I’m going to do something which i terribly dislike, and make you click a link to read my post. I’m doing this mainly because I’m posting about something that not everyone wants to see. You can read the title of the article to figure out what I mean.

While browsing this section, though it wasn’t my original intention, I ended up running into many many nudes. Nudity doesn’t bother me, of either sex, at least not by itself. Its really the composition of the image that gives it meaning, good or bad.

Artistic nudity is beautiful, nudity for just pornographic sake is ugly. One image i found in particular, though barely containing nudity, was pornographic, and had no artistic value. There was no flow in the image, it wasn’t clean enough or even grunge enough to fit into a niche, and the girl was chained up while being molested by another girl… Why the hell do people make images like this? WHY? (On another note, this image has been deleted from deviantArt.)

Many of these photographers post multiple images in sets. They use the same model or backdrop and change small things every time. One of these photographers that I noticed last night was posting a set of a lanky girl, with orange stripes painted on her. Because I was browsing from the newest on, I passed over most of the set while browsing. The largest of the three images I’ve added below caught my attention. This image has style. It has flow, it has emotion. The image has artistic value.

The rest of the set… I couldn’t dislike more. The image on the left, and the one in the middle, they don’t really have anything going for them artistically… They’re just soft-core porn…

The below images are from a german woman who really knows how to use nudity artistically. She’s got a good 10 pages of nude images, and yet none of them are sexual at all. Seriously, in browsing her gallery, the image of her with the camear I’ve got linked below exudes more sex than any of her nudes.

Day 19: Multitasking.

First Off, I have to say, my browser skin is epic.

Second off, the article shown in the screenshot is perfectly right, except for the part about multitasking. I multitask extensively. I’ve always got multiple tabs open in firefox, and many many windows else open. I’ve got music playing, a game playing, firefox open with 7 tabs, chrome open with 3 tabs, 3 msn windows, notepad, photo viewer, and two explorer windows open now.

I need to get a quad core processor… >_> My pentium 4 works, but just isn’t good enough for me to multitask the way I want to. I need at least twice as many windows open as I’ve got to feel satisfied.

Day 18: Interview!

Today, I had to interview one of the members of the Civil Engineering staff. I WAS supposed to do it with a group of 2 other people, but one of them had a class during every one of our faculties office hours, and the other one just forgot.

We didn’t have to go to our CIV 101 class today because of the interviews this week. So I’ve got just speech today.

Speech is a very weird class.

The major thing I got out of speech today was that professionals have to stereotype to speak.

Today, my lab class was overshadowed with DISCRIMINATION!

People have no friendliness for those using linux. They have no idea of how the programs are different. I got marked down because my computer didn’t have MICROSOFT FLIPPIN OFFICE, and used open office instead.

Open office math has no options for setting the x-axis of a graph to scale, and just evenly spaces the given data. Its kind of annoying, but on my laptop, I have ubuntu. Silly silly ubuntu.

In my speech class today, we had to make poems. Crappy poems, but poems none the less. We had to choose a word, and then its opposite. Then we had to list 20 words for each word that those words made us think about. I chose fire before I knew the teacher was going to make us pick the opposite. So I ended up with fire and ice.

Then, we had to make a poem using 30ish, I don’t remember the exact number of the 42 words, and nothing but those 30 words.

Day 15: Dvorak

Today, I blog while typing in dvorak.

I dunno why I tried this, but it is quite an interesting experience.
I set my keyboard layout to dvorak when installing ubuntu.
Also, after typing 8 lines, I'm getting somewhat proficient. I already
recognize where most keys are, but the less common ones are a terrible
pain. I've got my background set as a dvorak keyboard, and not looking
at it is hard.

My chem teacher got the ~~swine~~ flu today. Yay.

I've got less than half an hour to perfect typing like this before
class. I'm graduating from the keyboard on the desktop now. Its
surprisingly easy to learn something when you put your mind to it.

Day 14: Competition, What competition?

As I said before, my speech class for yesterday was canceled. It turns out that my writing class today was also canceled, I wrote it down, but forgot to remember.

Printing here at OIT is a nightmare. If you’re at a normal fixed computer, you have to use the browser to access the printer list, and then find the printer closest to you, download the driver, and only then can you print.

In the library, they use a secure printing method, so you can print without having to go through the above method, but you have to go to the printer, and input a password directly to the printer to get it to push out your paper.

I miss having my own printer, but the last one I had corrupted it’s inks too quickly. I also miss the built in scanner. I want to get one of those small scanners that move the paper rather than the scanbar. Also, it would be epic to have a laptop with a built in printer. You wouldn’t need anything bulky for a black and white printer that only does a single piece of paper at a time.

Chemistry is too easy. Metrics are too easy. They also are so easy, I remember their conversions, but don’t remember that I remember. I kept fretting during my quiz that I had them wrong, but afterwards checked a conversion chart, and had put them down pefectly. u(mu) is x10^-6, n is x10^-9 and p is x10^-12.

My Speech teacher told us last class that she was going to be gone, and gave us a few youtube videos to watch while we didn’t have class.

Day 10: Weekend Skipping

I’ve decided that I’m going to be skipping the weekends for posting. It may not make perfect sense, but it allows me to go away and do stuff on the weekends without worrying about posting my blog.

I tried the schools “cafeteria” food here, and it’s pretty decent, and cheap. I was talking with my girlfriend, who is going to UofO, and the meal plans are completely different up there. Where OIT’s plan is counted by “Points” which equal cents, the UofO “Points” are roughly dollars. As I’ve got the smallest meal plan, I’ve got about $2.50 cents a day, which will get me a main meal for EVERY meal of the day. I can get 3 servings of scrambled eggs for 45 points, a corn dog(A hell of a lot better quality corn dog than i was expecting) for 40 points, and a piece of pizza for 70 points. Giving myself about 250 points a day, that leaves me with 95 points to spend on extras for my meals. I can get a 22 ounce can of Arizona tea for 75 points, and a doughnut for 10 points.

It seems people HATE the pass between Klamath Falls and Medford with a passion. I’ve had my entire scout troop, and even my family flake out this weekend, because of a chance of snow. My parents, at least, were on the road before they turned around, so i can’t blame them. But a SCOUT TROOP being afraid of a little snow? I cannot believe that.

I brought 2 sweatshirts, a jacket, and a windbreaker with me here to OIT, knowing it gets quite cold. I’ve yet to use ANY of them. We had a little snow Sunday morning, but it wasn’t sticking, and it ended about an hour after I woke up.

I’ve been watching a lot of movies the last few days. There isn’t much to do after everyone goes home from classes, so the campus ends up being really dead. I’m getting really good at watching a 2 and a half hour movie in 10 minutes. I can get the entire gist of the movie, and sample all the acting while jumping ahead 20 seconds at a time.

Every once in a while, i land on a movie that gets interesting enough that I go back to the beginning and watch it fully. So far, I’ve only landed on a few of these movies. One of them was terrible in its own right, but it was funny enough for me to sit and watch it. That movie was “Big Bad Wolf” which was a terrible b-rate horror movie about a werewolf that jests while he kills his victims. The other ones were Juno, A lot Like Love, and Fantastic Four: Rise of the silver surfer.

Juno was by far the best of the movies that I watched in the last few days. I’m attaching a chatlog of my reactions to the movie. I lost the responses of the other people to the first half of my replies, but I’ve still got the second half. I put it into a page, right below.

Day 5: Chem, Calc, and Crazies. Also, Comedian.

The first day of classes has been defeated. Miniboss: Crazy barely English speaking chemistry lecture teacher. Defeated with prior knowledge of chemistry, so i don’t have to even know what she’s saying.

My classes so far are easy… Easier than I’ve ever expected college to be. The chemistry curriculum is definitely a step below what I took in high school, and as I took AP Calculus, my calculus class is just review and mastery of a subject I already know.

I finished the homework for the entire week in my Writing class during my lunch hour today, consisting of a simple getting to know worksheet, and a 2-5 page memo. I’ve yet to find a printer to produce a hard copy of the memo, which is due Friday, but I can figure that out tomorrow.

So, the dorm halls all have a “theme” here at oit. They’re decorated according to that theme by the Residence Hall Advisors, Aka Civil Protection. I got lucky and got the hall decorated to super heroes, instead of the terrible one the guys across the building got: Disney.

In honor of that theme, I got this poster, and put it on my door. Behold, the greatest Anti-Hero of all time. THE COMEDIAN.

Day 4:Video Games and Spaghetti Dinners

So, as I haven’t had any of my classes yet, and there was noting planned till 3 o’clock in the afternoon, I started the day off with video games. I installed a few games that i had laying around, two of them just not working at all on my computer. It seems I don’t have the CPU or graphic capabilities for Mirrors Edge, and Star Wars Battlefront II either was pathetic on the PC, or ran into some weird error with my processor.

I ended up playing a few hours of KOTOR II, as I haven’t played it yet. Still haven’t gotten past the initial level, though.

We had to sit through this terrible and terribly long mandatory meeting about the residence hall today. Woopie for an hour and a half of unskilled speakers. Afterwards, though, we had a spaghetti dinner, which tasted great. They even served free desert: Haagen Das ice cream bars.

Day 3: Old friends and new hilarities.

Today, I found some of my friends from high school around during the campus activities. I won a game of Apples to Apples. By the end of the game, i had 5 cards, where the second most was only 3. Apparently, playing a Will Smith card while any girl is judging automatically warrants a win.

We had a speaker about relationships today. He had some interesting things to say, but was able to keep the entire audience laughing at the same time. He also seemed to think that all college relationships were about sex, which got kind of annoying. During every section of his speech, he made sure to include gays and lesbians, even if he didn’t know how to apply his knowledge to that part of their specific attitudes.

Mr. Dorman seems to be offline, so I cannot collect random shit from him as of right now.

Day 2: Epic Vending Machines

Second day at college. Classes don’t start till monday. I’m bored out of my mind. THere are never enough people around to talk to, probably because school hasn’t started yet, and people can still arrive in the next 2 days, AND that people living off campus have no reason to be here.

So, they don’t actually turn on our internets till sunday night, when school starts… I’ve just been bumming off of the wireless terminals in the lobbies, I can get a weak signal on my laptop from my room, but it cuts off frequently. I’m in the third floor lobby, typing this up right now. It’s got a great view of the Klamath lake, so its quite nice to sit in here and work. I wonder how busy it will be when school starts.

So far, I’ve used up a serving of applesauce, two granola bars, a bagel, and about a tablespoon of peanut butter. I’m going to save my popcorn for later, and hopefully get my parents to buy me some really cheap ramen or cup-O-soup next time they go to costco. They’ve got a week at a local resort in October from some vacation points they spent, so I should be able to grab it from them then…

Now data is singing!

The OIT campus is quite funny. Its obviously been built over the course of many years, and is even under construction right now. There are many different styles used in the buildings, but many of them have attempted to carry over architectural similarities from other buildings. There is one piece in particular that makes me laugh. It’s a beam, that stretches out in all 4 sides, to make a sort of x shape. This beam shows up in many buildings, and even is integrated into the walls of the gym/pool building.

To come to the title of this post, there is a vending machine in this lobby, in about the style of the snack machines, is set up for drinks. IT has an arm that reaches out and picks up the individual drinks, and sets it down in the pickup box. I keep watching it, as I’m typing from the third floor lobby. I cant help but wonder why it must be so specialized.

Fresh Start.

Above is a picture of a lake during my 50 miler this summer, it seems that I haven’t posted it yet. Both pictures are taken from the same point, at the same time of day. The difference in lighting just because of camera angle is great.

Today, I checked into my dorm room, played Ultimate Frisbee in the dark with glowsticks, and attempted to get wireless internet on my computers. I need to go buy an Ethernet cord tomorrow, so i can get reliable and faster internet on my desktop. OIT limits all students to 5GB of bandwidth a week… I can use that easily in a day at home…

Luckily, I’ve got 15 gigs of music on my hard drive, and 62 gigs of movies(HD movies are fun.). It should be enough to tide me over till i can get home. I’m a few hundred episodes behind on the animes I watched a few years ago… I have an urge to watch more of them, but I cant.

In about two weeks, I leave for college. I’ve bought all my new supplies, save anything that comes up unexpectedly. The changes from this current life at home are seeming drastic, but needed. My parents are becoming overly protective, almost in a wish to keep me home and chained to the floor. My sister(At 16 years of age), the brat that she has always been, is acting like an only child already… Screaming and throwing something akin to a tantrum every time I ask for the car when she supposedly needs it as a locker for her soccer stuff while at school. Also, the bus is too lowly for her. I rode the bus 3 years out of my 4 years in high school, and she has yet to ride it an entire year. As soon as my sister entered high school, my mom started driving her to school and back for her soccer practice.

For the past few years, I’ve been using a terrible old CRT monitor(The Philips Magnavox 107S in this article. I cant believe it once sold for $250). This summer, I decided to buy a flat screen monitor so I could take my desktop to college with me, where I already know the desks are quite a bit too small to be able to fit a CRT and still use it as a desk. After a frustrating time trying to get a monitor from someone on craigslist, I found a 23in Acer widescreen acer monitor. This thing is dreamy, the colour is perfect, the contrast is perfect, and it plays beautiful HD video. It also has built in speakers, which may be low quality, but get the job done, and don’t take up any additional space, which I know will be at a premium soon. 1920x1080 is so much larger a space to work with than 1280x1024.

Photo Madness

I’ve taken these photos over the past month, all of them on my new phone. It takes 2 megapixel photos, which are more than sufficient for daily activities, and if i really want artistic photos, ill take my 8MP camera, or my dads 12MP with me.

This last weekend was a 3 day weekend. With my family, my girlfriend, and my sisters psuedo-boyfriend, we went to the Oregon coast. All the photos down to the skateboarding ones are taken at the coast… except for the bird in the first photo, that one was at home. The rest are at random places around Medford.

My blog posts are mostly long winded, but this one I shall keep to mostly pictures, enjoy.

I watched the new version of "The day the earth stood still" last weekend. It was quite a good movie, but many things about it both baffled, and annoyed. Why wouldn't they stay and help humans to pass that point of no return. Why were their only actions: Go away, or kill.

I am currently downloading, and I shall soon watch the old version. I want to know how much artistic liberty modern filmmakers take when they remake old movies like this, and 50's sci-fi is great.

Maplestory is quite fun, but its getting slightly annoying... Too much grinding, but the grinding is so much fun... I can't really tell which way I actually am leaning on this right now... I think its a good game, but I don't know whether I want to continue playing.

The coincidence of numbers is so great that it cannot be ignored. I see 42, the answer to life, the universe, and everything, everywhere. I got a 42 out of 50 on my English test, and my normal test average is 84... I had 42 text messages in my inbox when I got my test back, AND 42 bucks in my wallet... Oh, and my English total grade rounds up to 84.

Today, I looked over at my alarm clock at about 5:00 in the afternoon. The clock is an hour fast because of daylight savings time, so it read 5:55 at a time that was 5 minutes till 5 o'clock.

I could probably find more number coincidences, but I don't feel like looking for any more.

I found an engineering bible from 104 years ago. People used to make books a lot more durable than they do now. So far, I have found only one page that has any actual damage, and the pages feel like they are made of silk, compared to today's modern "paper..." The binding is quite worn, but its probably still going to last a long time more.

It is easy to forget how much we take calculators for granted, and this book shows how life was like before we had them to do all the dirty memorization and the works for us. Its got tables and tables of raw data about sine values, circumferences, logs, squares, reciprocals... Everything you can imagine, and not be able to work out quickly in your head.

With a 100 foot wide road, there are 12.1 acres of surface area in a mile of road. The reciprocal (multiplicative opposite) of 666 is .001501502. A length of pipe with a diameter of 1 foot, and a length of 1 foot, has an area of .7854 cub ft. Hehe, random data.

Actually, the copy I have is almost identical to the one referenced in this article, except for the fact that mine is in better condition, and doesn't have the handwritten notes at the back. Mine still has all of its pages, but the binding is still slightly flaking.

I think I am going to try and do something like a wallpaper a month. Its probably not going to be directly related to the month, but it will most definitely look good on computers during that month. These will not be my creation, but my findings.

The Internet is too vast for a place like this to get attention. The blog of a simple high school student will probably never be noticed, but its nice to just have it here in case it somehow does get noticed.

My last Digital media project was this poster over here. The project was to make a design out of just black and white text. I traced a picture of a TF2 Engineer flying on one of his buildings. Its really cool what you can do with the letter J.

Apparently, it can. I did this review for my school website. Its not perfect, but its my first story done for the website. I am actually a semi-decent writer, but I make a lot of mistakes.

Spore: Build A Species Workshop

Spore, a relatively new game released by MAXIS, is both a technological achievement, and a fun game. Though it isn't as good as was expected, it still manages to create a game that will provide many hours of entertainment and should be at least tried by most gamers.

The game doesn't center on any sort of game genre, but attempts to bring in many types of games into one. The player starts out controlling a cell, and slowly evolves until the player gets their creature to blast off into space. This is done by using 5 different types of gameplay, from a flOw-like cell stage to a Real Time Strategy civilization stage.

The game allows you to create your own creatures using an in-game editor, and then it uses procedural generation to make those creatures move and live, no matter how weird you create them. There is also a procedural music creator that generates the background music based on the parts you put on your creature. A national anthem generator allows you to make your own music once you get to the civilization stage of the game.

The game sells for about $50 to $80, depending on whether you get the original or the special edition, named the "Galactic Edition." Also, there is a DS version called "spore creatures" and a cell-phone/iPhone version called "Spore Origins." The former being a stylized version of the creature stage, and the latter being a copy as the cell stage.

Reviews are greatly mixed. It got 2,567 one star reviews on amazon.com, (Mainly for digital rights management issues with the game.) but pulled off a decent 85 out of 100 on Metacritic.com.

Personally, I love this game. I like how open ended the space stage of the game is, and the creation of creatures is quite fun.

I have had this uncovered fan going in my room for a few months now. Every once in a while, I will get to staring at it, and want to stick my hand in it...

Well, today, I ended up doing just that...

I was vacuuming my room, as it was dirty. I passed the vacuum too close to the fan, and the fan went into my hand like a saw... Gashed it up real good.

I went downstairs to go get some Band-Aids, and after talking to my mom, I fainted from the shock of the fan hitting the bone of my hand. I remember starting to turn around to go upstars... When I woke up, there was screaming, and a huge hole in the wall behind me, and I couldn't feel any pain left.

I am really starting to wonder what my pain tolerance actually is. I don't think it was the pain that I fainted from, but the sight of the gash, or the feeling of vibrating bone...

On a totally unrelated note, I transferred over a good amount of the music to my desktop, which now has nothing but Chrome, a single indie game, and 7 gigs of music. I think I'm just going to use it like a big stationary iPod, with a subwoofer. ^_^

Bah.

I keep starting blogs, but I never actually can get around to finish them. I've got a nice juicy spore review I did for school, I am going to post it once I get it to this computer.

Digital Media Project

For Digital Media, we had to make a project consisting of three layers. A shadow layer, a background layer, and a layer of 18 1"x1" squares, colorized to a palate of our choosing. I originally just chose colors from a picture of the Joker, but eventually, I felt I had to have him in the picture. The Joker was by far the best character in the new batman movie.

There is a Facebook group dedicated to the late Heath Ledger.

PS: Should I add any sort of text to the image I made? If so, what should I add?

Wright appeared on the group's first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967 alongside lead guitarist Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason.

Dave Gilmour joined the band at the start of 1968 while Barrett left the group shortly afterwards.

Kotaku reports of a room deep within Segas headquarters that holds a copy of every single game made by Sega.

It’s the stuff dreams are made of. Every single Sega game ever released (plus some bonus “competitor’s” titles), all secretly tucked away in a forgotten room at Sega HQ. Yeah. They forgot about it. I decided to pull out my graphic design skills, and make us a custom banner.

Most of it, I came up with during a chat session...
Temeas simium meum, my name during that chat, means "Hold my monkey." Nothing bad was implied by that, it just is a funny phrase.

No really, the airlines are too paranoid for their own good.

You CAN carry a normal size empty water bottle.
You CAN carry the same amount of water, in multiple 3oz bottles, in a single ziplock bag.
You CAN'T carry a full water bottle...

Honestly, if someone is going to be carrying explosive chemicals, they are probably going to be in individual parts anyway, and if someone is carrying a water bottle, its going to be water or something only slightly more sinister, sugar water. Watch out airmen, I am going to rot your teeth out!

Psh... At least just about everything else that isn't sharp, super pressurized, or directly explosive is allowed on the plane. I just hope they don't yell at me to put my DS or Zune away... That would be a fun killer...

Oh, and they don't mind if your checked baggage is full of guns and swords, as long as they don't contain anything more explosive than bullets, and are not in your carry on... I want to fill a second bag full of knives, and bring it with, just for lulz. How many knives does it take to equal 70 lbs?

6 days in sunny Hawaii? What do I need other than a few changes of clothes, my swimsuit, a book, and my electronics? I am not camping, so most of my normal packed gear has to be removed...

I registered for classes at Rogue Community College today. Looks like I'll be taking Into to Flash and Intro to Networks. Yep, only two classes, for one, RCC doesn't have very many classes that intrest me, and my financial aid is pretty skimpy. If I'm lucky my grandma might be able to help pay for a third class, if so I would take an art class. It think I ought to look into business classes as well. They can be pretty handy to have should I need some kind of job to hold me over.

Stupid statement jests... I need to find something better to joke about...

I have been trying to find a good free mmo... I have tried everything... I don't have the patience for 99% of the ones out there, and the only game that has stuck me as lasting fun is pay2play... Tabula Rasa... What does it take for these people to make games that are fun?

Also, crafting systems? Whats the deal with those? No-one can create them well. It always is better just to sell the raw resources than to craft things yourself. In a well built game, it would be a better deal to sell the handiwork'd item, instead of the Raw materials that made them... Even in SWG, by far the best crafting system I have seen so far... Still gets this wrong... You can make many times as much money selling the raw materials than selling the product. When I had my free trial, I was making speeder bikes. The 8000 some resources that I needed to make the craft cost about 4 credits each(were I to buy or sell them), and to sell the speeder, I was only able to get 20,000.

With Tabula Rasas crafting system...(What brought this rant up) You have to have like 10,000 base materials, each costing like 10 credits, to create 100 of the top tier items, costing only 150 credits... (of which you can buy each tier of items in the store, and no EXP is given for crafting, nor is there any reason to do this craft line...)

Also, blueprints... How the hell could they be one use only... Especially for items normally mass produced... You should be able to produce infinite amounts of items with that one blueprint... As long as you have the materials to create those items...

I want a good crafting system...
And a non boring game...
Is that too much to ask?

Wacom Bamboo

Being that it was recently my birthday, I got a Wacom Bamboo Fun drawing tablet. It has a functioning area of 5.8 x 3.7. I can use this for photo editing, drawing and painting. If I ever get good enough I'd like to make some kind of webcomic of my own. As you can see it comes with a mouse and a pen. The pen cursor follows the pen 1:1 which takes a little getting used to. So far the mouse is kinda pointless, the G7 I have (you can see a glimpse of it on the left) is far superior.

Overall it's a pretty cool device and hopefully I'll get better at art because of it.
